Once the Mod Podge is dry apply diluted white paint/diluted drywall mud using large strokes in random directions. Tip: Change up pattern/color/shape of adjacent wallpaper scraps for a unique look. Tip: You can leave some edges torn/not completely adhered to the wall for a perfectly imperfect look, overlapping edges can be treated with extra Mod Podge if desired Use the brush to apply an even layer of Mod Podge to the back of the wallpaper scraps and apply to the wall Optional: drywall mud diluted with water or white paint diluted with water Mod Podge in the matte or glossy finish (depending on the look you want) Wallpaper scraps, the more the merrier! Torn/uneven ends = MORE TEXTURE Be sure to follow the directions as given on the package. Once this is done, we use Thompson’s Concrete Sealer to seal it (especially in bathrooms). TEXTURE IS GOOD so don't be too precious! You could even use a small piece of coarse sandpaper to even it out. The final step is to go back after the mixture sets and with a drywall knife and break off spots where the texture has built up too much for your liking. No wall turns out the same - somewhat like our lime wash method here. Have fun with it - it's YOUR wall and the different methods make for an interesting and unique finish. Ensure the primer is applied evenly, whichever technique you use. ![]() Start from the bottom of your desired wall and using your drywall knife, pull the mix straight up the wall - we like to fan it out as we go for added texture. You really can't mess it up too much so use your design instincts with this one and just make sure the final texture is something you can spread - as Steve puts it: "Like Peanut Butter". We don't have an exact amount of water but keep adding until you get the consistency of pancake batter. Using a 5-gallon bucket, we add half the MicroTek™ One Coat bag with half of the WhiteWater Color Pack and start adding water slowly and mixing as we go. ![]() We start by using the MicroTek™ One Coat Micro Topping (which is a thin concrete overlay mix that can be applied on floors and walls) in white and the WhiteWater Color Pack to make it extra white. Should I do another layer of aquadefense after I make the surfaces nice, since there are some spots that I am worried about leaks on (joint between sheetrock & cement board, cuts around trim openings (they're a little big and I'm going to thinset on some waterproof collars for the pipes)? This would mean our layers would be cement backer + aquadefense + thinset skim coat + aquadefense + tile mastic - I'm not sure if that is a terrible idea or necessary to make sure we have a level surface that is also definitely waterproof.SureCrete MicroTek™ One Coat Micro Topping If this had been done 100% correctly it seems like a lot of this thinset skimcoat work would have been done under the Aquadefense, then Aquadefense, then a layer of thinset to get the tile to adhere. ![]() So, I am going to be doing a lot of leveling and feathering out with thinset on top of AquaDefense- which is fine. Also, we didn't have drywall up yet (there was an asbestos discovery so everything went to studs - surprise) so they couldn't thinset the transition between sheetrock and cement backer board. Here's my question, I know they did not shim out the studs and level the walls, and they also put tape on the joints but did not thinset the joints pre-waterproofing. So, cement board is up, they applied AquaDefense and called it good. The plan was they would get the surface ready for us to come in and tile. The contractor put up cement board after repairing some water damage in the old bath/shower wall (window had so much water damage it was literally dirt with an earthworm in it!). So, we bought a house with the intention of doing most of the finishing levels of renovation ourselves and hiring to have structural work done.
